One of the key roles of the Permanent Mission of the United Republic of Tanzania to United Nations Offices in Nairobi is to ensure that Tanzania’s Government interest are protected or secured in accordance with Tanzania’s Government Policies.  As the Mission is accredited   to the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) and United Nations  Environment Programme (UNEP) it works with the Secretariats of these two organizations and with the Representatives of other Member States in Nairobi to cooperatively advance the United Republic of Tanzania objective of protecting the environment while reducing poverty and promoting sustainable economic development in both rural and Urban areas as well as helping  in finding sustainable solutions to the challenge of rapid urbanization.

The Mission also serves as a link between these two UN Organizations based in Nairobi and the Focal Ministries which are Vice President Office- Division of Environment ( and Ministry of Lands and Human Settlements Development ( of the United Republic of Tanzania that engage with them.

Overview of the United Nations Programs based in Nairobi, Kenya

The mandates of the two UN Programs that are headquartered in Nairobi entail issues that are central to the challenges and opportunities of sustainable development and sustainable urbanization:

  1. The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the United Nations agency for human settlements and promotes socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.

Originally UN-Habitat was established in 1978 as an outcome of the United Nations Conference on Human Settlements held in Vancouver, Canada in 1976, UN-Habitat is charged with coordination and harmonizing human settlements activities within the UN System. It facilitates global exchange of information on shelter and Sustainable human settlements development, and gives countries Policy and Technical advice.

The organization mandate is outlined in the Vancouver Declaration of Human Settlements, the Second United Nations Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat II), the Millennium Development Goals and the General Assembly Resolutions like Resolution 56/206 by which the United Nations Center for Human Settlements was elevated to the United Nations Human Settlements Programme.

UN-Habitat’s work is also directly related to the United Nations Millennium Declaration, particularly the goals of member States to improve the lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers by the year 2020, target 11, Millennium Development Goal No. 7 and Target 10 which calls for the reduction by half of the number without sustainable access to safe drinking water.

It began as result of the United Nations Conference on Human Environment in June 1972. In that conference UNEP was declared as leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda that promotes coherent implementation of environmental dimension of sustainable development within United Nations System and that serves as an authoritative for global environment.
